      Starlings on headstones
And at the forest edge; snow
      Etches the darkness


      A shortcut; my boots
Crunching iced gravel and snow
      Silence the woods owl


      On the hairpin curve
Snow-blurred junipers crackle
      As the truck sputters


      On a walnut’s crown
A red-tailed hawk rests; sundown
      Streaks from the forest
